Firefighters have tackled a fire which caused extensive damage to a basement flat.
Four fire engines from Temple, Bedminster and Avonmouth fire stations were called to reports of a fire at the four storey building.
When crews arrived, firefighters in breathing apparatus used high pressure hose reels to fight the fire affecting the basement flat. A man in his 70s who had been in the flat at the time of the fire had managed to escape, however he was attended to at the scene by the ambulance service after inhaling smoke.
Although the fire crews contained the fire to the basement flat extensive damage was caused. Flats above were also evacuated due to the smoke from the fire below.
Lives were saved by ensuring smoke alarms were fitted in the flats The flats are covered by the Regulatory reform fire safety order 2005 and sets standards to ensure tenants safety. It is a legal requirement to have a fire risk assessment carried out if you have communal stairways in a block of flats.
